Privacy policy

Last updated:

How we handle the personal data you share with us through this website, in accordance with Costa Rica’s Law 8968 on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of their Personal Data.

Who is responsible

The controller of your data is FM Abogados & Notarios, with its main office at Avenida Escazú, Edificio AE 202, 4th floor, office 404, Escazú, San José, Costa Rica. For any matter regarding your data, write to notificaciones@fm-abogados.com or call +506 2519-9630.

What data we collect

We only collect the data you give us when you write to us through the contact form, by email or on WhatsApp:

  • Your name and email address.
  • Your phone number, if you choose to provide it.
  • Your country of residence and how you prefer to be contacted.
  • The service you are interested in and your message.

To protect the form against spam, we keep an encrypted (irreversible) version of your IP address for one hour. We do not link it to your name or use it for anything else.

How we use it

We use your data to answer your enquiry, prepare a proposal and, if you decide to hire us, provide the service and meet our legal and professional obligations. We will not send you marketing without your consent and we never sell or rent your data.

We process your data with your consent, which you give by ticking the box on the form or by contacting us on your own initiative. If you hire us, we also process it to carry out the engagement and to meet the obligations the law places on lawyers and notaries. You may withdraw your consent at any time by writing to us.

Professional secrecy

As lawyers and notaries, we are bound by professional secrecy. The information you share with us about your case is handled in strict confidence and is known only to the team working on it.

Who we share it with

We only share your data when it is needed to help you:

  • Providers that host the website and our email, who act on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality. Their servers may be located outside Costa Rica.
  • Authorities, registries and public institutions, when your matter requires it or the law obliges us.
  • Other professionals (for example, experts or correspondents in another country), only if your case needs it and with your knowledge.

How long we keep it

We keep the data from an enquiry for as long as needed to handle it. If you hire us, we keep it for the duration of the engagement and afterwards for the periods required by professional, notarial and tax rules. After that, we delete it securely.

Your rights

At any time and free of charge, you can:

  • Find out what data we hold about you and how we use it (access).
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data (rectification).
  • Ask us to delete it when it is no longer needed (erasure).
  • Object to a specific use or withdraw your consent.

Write to notificaciones@fm-abogados.com with your name and your request. We will reply within the time limits set by law. If you feel we have not handled your request properly, you can contact Costa Rica’s data protection agency (PRODHAB).

Cookies and third-party services

If you accept them in the cookie notice, we use analytics and advertising tools (Google Analytics, Google Ads and Microsoft Clarity) to understand how the site is used and to measure our campaigns. Without your consent they are not loaded. Full details, and how to change your choice, are in our cookie policy.

Other elements connect to external services with their own policies:

  • The Google rating we display is loaded from Google.
  • Links to Google Maps and WhatsApp take you to those services; what you do there is governed by their terms.

Security

The website runs over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) and we apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data against loss, unauthorised access or alteration.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect legal changes or changes in our services. The date of the latest update is shown at the top of this page.
